The many Saints of Ibiza




Ibiza is famous for many things and know by names such as “The White Isle”, and the island does have a reputation for some fairly hedonistic activity in certain areas in the summer months... but the ying & the yang of Ibiza counter balances these sinners as it is also the island of Saints. There are 14 saints who have been honoured & commemorated with a village in their name...and of course a church.

Each of these saintly villages are known by either the Spanish (Castellano) name, or also by the Ibicencan (a form of Catalan) name.

Here are the 14 saints with the Ibicencan name in brackets if it is also known by this name, and the saints’ day when you can expect a few festivities to take place in the town or village.

The largest is Santa Eulalia on the east coast with a large selection of bars, restaurants, matins & promenade. The smallest is San Francesc, which really consists of 1 village, 1 bar & 1 restaurants and is located close to ses Salinas & Es Cavallet beach with a traditional white washed church next to the salt farming & a great place to get a view of the sunset at certain times of the year.

When you are travelling around the island you can expect to see the road signs listed in Ibicencan and many of the locals, particularly in the small & more rural areas will speak Ibicencan as their first language, but of course in bars & restaurants English is widely spoken…phew !!

There are other churches in villages that have not been name (d after a saint, such as the village of Es Cubells, and of course in Ibiza Town (or Eivissa to use the Ibicencan name) there are a number of churches including Santa Maria at the very top of the old town “Dalt Vila”

Ibiza Public Holiday - 5th August

Ibiza Public Holidays (part one) - 5th August The public holiday in Ibiza on the 5 th August is celebrated every year and is known by a few names including: Santa Maria de las Nieves or Nuestra Senora de las Nieves (which translates as “Our Lady of the Snow”, which is interesting as there is not much snow in Ibiza!). Santa Maria is the Patron Saint of Ibiza.   The festivities continue until the 8 th August, although the main festivities are on the 5 th which culminates in a firework display. And the reason for this celebration? well it doesn’t take much to start a fiesta in Ibiza and the reason for this one is to commemorate August 8 th 1235 (that is the year not the 25 minutes to 1) when Ibiza was conquered by the Kingdom of Aragon, previously occupied by the Muslim leadership. Las Dalias Hippy Market - Night Market

Las Dalias is a must visit place of interest on the White Isle. Located close to San Carlos village towards the northeast of Ibiza is the hippy market that has become a bit of an institution on the island. It may be a bit of a cliche but this is more than just a market, with music, food and drink...it's more a way of life, and offers locals & visitors a chance to meander around the many stalls selling clothes, jewellery, art and general "nick-nacks" to help you celebrate and remember your time in Ibiza.
